Book Review: Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano (2021) 🌺 @minotaur_books 🌺
Finlay Donovan is killing it . . . except, she’s really not. She’s a stressed-out single-mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlay’s life is in chaos: the new book she promised her literary agent isn’t written, her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her, and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.
When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, she’s mistaken for a contract killer, and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet . . . Soon, Finlay discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.

Wow… I’m just going to admit it: I didn’t expect to like this book. I wanted to check out the hype. I was surprised when I found a light, humorous (sometimes) read that was fun to get through. The author did a great job with the dialogue and style of writing. I think the premise demands a bit of suspended reality. You need to be able to take it as it is… don’t expect something deep or realistic.
Bottom Line: It’s something I would suggest to those in a reading slump. It’s something I’d suggest to all ages, including middle aged women (who I think would be a great audience for this book tbh) despite being marketed as a YA sometimes. I think this is best as almost a parody of an assassin/contract hire storyline 😂 the main character is one of those quirky “can’t do anything right” / awkward types, I dunno, that trope kinda makes me laugh/smile sometimes when you sit a bit of your own personality in a character.
Either way, I’d suggest this to those who are in the mood for a chuckle and a quick, fluffy read with some content noted such as death, divorce, assault/blackmail (brief mention). It’s something you can knock out in a day or two! I’ve also heard the audiobook is good. ❤️🌺🎉
EDIT: I also found out recently that there is another coming out soon, a number 2. How fun!
